About This Company

Independent literary publishing in Vienna defines Edition Atelier, whose programme brings together contemporary German-language fiction, rediscovered literature from the twentieth century, and nonfiction that engages with social questions. Its list encompasses novels, essays, collected volumes, and historically grounded writing, with particular attention to Austrian exile literature and texts that had not previously appeared in book form. The publisher works with authors and editors on books that connect literary craft with questions of memory, political history, social change, and individual experience.

Founded in connection with the cultural journal Wiener Journal in 1980, the house continued after the death of Jörg Mauthe and became part of Wiener Zeitung GmbH in 2002. Since late 2011, it has operated again as an independent publisher in Vienna’s ninth district. Its editorial approach combines new writing with carefully prepared reissues, drawing on specialist editors to identify neglected works and contribute contextual afterwords. Recent publications illustrate this dual focus, ranging from fiction examining the history of sugar in Europe to Fritz Kolb’s account of wartime internment in India and enduring writings by Lina Loos.
