Gelion plc

Commercialisation of sulfur battery technology is the central mission of Gelion plc, an energy storage company developing lithium-sulfur and room-temperature sodium-sulfur systems for mobility and stationary storage. Its proprietary Nano-Encapsulated Sulfur, or NES™, is a cathode active material that uses nanoconfinement to manage sulfur behaviour in battery cells. The material is designed to replace nickel, cobalt and manganese cathode inputs with abundant sulfur while working with established lithium-ion and sodium-ion electrolytes, cell formats and manufacturing processes. The company is pursuing lithium-sulfur batteries for electric vehicles and electric aviation, and sodium-sulfur batteries for grid storage and economy electric vehicles.

Commercial development combines industrial partnerships, intellectual property and energy storage integration. Collaboration with TDK Corporation covers prototype development and commercialisation of sulfur battery technology, while a £2 million Joint Development Agreement with Mitsui Kinzoku addresses validation and production pathways for NES™ cathode material. The company is also working with the National Laboratory of the Rockies to validate its material and demonstrate a domestic United States supply chain. Its Integration Solutions business delivers battery storage systems for capacity firming, with Group Energy Pty Ltd as its first commercial customer. Through its OXLiD subsidiary, it is advancing lithium-sulfur technology for defence, aerospace and automotive applications, alongside lithium recycling technology acquired from Johnson Matthey in 2023.
