Orfeu Negro

Established in 2007 with RoseLee Goldberg’s The Art of Performance, Orfeu Negro publishes essays and documentary works that examine contemporary artistic practice. Its editorial programme spans dance, theatre, film, photography, architecture and the visual arts, bringing together critical writing from figures including Peter Brook, Jacques Rancière, Laurence Louppe and Didi Huberman. Since 2016, its publishing in gender and race studies has added works by Virginie Despentes, Judith Butler, bell hooks, Paul B. Preciado and Grada Kilomba, extending the house’s engagement with cultural, social and political thought.

Illustrated publishing forms a second principal activity through Orfeu Mini, launched in 2008 for children and adults. The collection combines illustration and graphic design in album format, publishing international artists such as Oliver Jeffers and Jon Klassen alongside Catarina Sobral, Manuel Marsol, Madalena Moniz and Carolina Celas. The Casimiro collection, introduced in 2010, addresses mature readers through erotic and provocative illustrated works. The company also operates BAOBÁ bookstore in Lisbon, an illustrated book specialist with an international selection for all ages and a programme of author meetings, storytelling, workshops and art education activities.
