Electrical distribution infrastructure is the core business of Tanelec Limited, an Arusha-based manufacturer established in 1981. The company supplies regional utilities and private-sector customers with distribution transformers, power transformers, electrical switchgear, metering units, line materials and accessories. Its transformer operation covers units rated up to 36 kV and from 5 kVA to 20,000 kVA, with particular experience in 11 kV and 33 kV distribution applications. Internal engineering and design resources develop standard, customised and application-specific transformer solutions, including pole-mounted, ground-mounted, irrigation and dry cast resin designs.

Manufacturing, refurbishment and repair are conducted from the Arusha factory, which has capacity for 14,000 distribution transformers annually and repair capacity of up to 500 units per month. The company operates facilities in Kampala, Nairobi, Ndola and Kitwe, extending its service reach across East, Central and Southern Africa. As part of TransCentury PLC, it combines transformer production with conductors, cables and switchgear integration. Its switchgear activity includes low-, medium- and high-voltage panel solutions for control, automation, distribution, protection and power quality applications, drawing on authorised representation for ABB, Schneider, Eaton and Siemens. ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certification underpin its quality and environmental management systems, while its Arusha Knowledge Transfer Center supports electrical engineering training.
