Mediaset operates as the Italian media and communications holding company within MFE-MEDIAFOREUROPE, combining free television production and distribution with film, multimedia content and advertising sales. Its broadcasting activities span five general interest networks and more than 30 specialist channels available through free and paid television services. The company also extends its programming across live and on-demand digital distribution through Mediaset Infinity, which carries entertainment programmes, fiction, films, documentaries and television channels. The business was formed in 1996 through the combination of RTI, Publitalia '80, Videotime and Elettronica Industriale, bringing together television networks, advertising sales, production and broadcast signal distribution. Its roots reach back to Canale 5 and the development of a national private television network in Italy during the 1980s.
